Job Description for a Natural Resources lead counselor at Camp Gregory

 

Overview of position--  A counselor whose program activity will be as a specialty leader in planning and leading activities that increase camper appreciation of and involvement with the natural environment

 

A summer natural resources leader at Camp Gregory is an opportunity to creatively initiate a new type of program at a camp with a long history as a traditional children's camp.    The camp is located on an approximately 35 acre site that includes rustic buildings, woods, fields, a hiking trail and significant footage of Cayuga Lake waterfront.

 

Minimum requirements

--Two or more years of college level study or a minimum of 30 semester hours or the equivalent in the fields of biology, ecology, geology, natural resources, environmental education, natural history interpretation, outdoor recreation or related fields.   A bachelorŐs degree in one of these fields would be a plus.

 

--At least 18 years old.

--Leadership and organizational skills, patience, and endurance.

--Emotional maturity, good moral character, and integrity.

--Previous experience working with youth.

--Physically fit and ready to work in the outdoors.

--Familiarity with or willingness to become familiar with natural resources that Camp Gregory offers.

--Familiarity with or willingness to become familiar with Camp Gregory history, philosophy, and guideline.

 

Responsible to   Camp Director

 

Responsibilities

 

--In cooperation with other staff, the Natural Resources Committee, and the Camping Committee plan activities for campers that will involve them with the natural resources that the camp offers.

--Lead campers in activities related to natural resources.

 

--Attend staff training prior to camp and become familiar with all camp policies and procedures.

--Cooperate with the senior counselors and directors in coordinating small group activities that you are leading/supervising.

--Be actively involved with campers in program activities at all times unless specifically excused.

--In cooperation with other counselors be responsible for the health, safety, and well-being of the campers to whom you are assigned.

--Actively assist campers in camp chores and duties and help them to appreciate how chores relate to modeling activities of sustainable living.

--Know the whereabouts of your assigned campers at all times.

--Adhere to staff guidelines.

--Interpret and model the camp philosophy and guidelines for the campers and cooperate with the Camp Program Committee, directors, and other counselors in making sure that the guidelines are followed consistently.

--Provide guidance and a model of good counseling qualities for CIT's.

--Show respect for campers, other staff members and self.

--Keep the needs of campers a priority at all times.

--Maintain a neat cabin.

--At the end of each week clean your cabin thoroughly before the campers leave.  Send all belongings home with them.

--Remember to have fun and make good memories!

Schedule  Counselor responsibilities include staying overnight at camp Sunday through Thursday nights.during resident camp weeks   Camping sessions are from  July 5 through August 6, 2010.   The first week is day camp

 

Compensation:     $250 per week for 5 weeks

 

For a very well qualified candidate consideration would be given to a different combination of duties which would increase the level of compensation or to employment on an hourly basis during hours when activities related to the natural environment are being planned and taking place.
